In recent years, it has become clear that the algorithms used by the tools and services affect our daily lives, sometimes in ways not even anticipated by the designers of the algorithms. This has led to great interest in “socially aware” algorithm design.

Michael Kearns and Aaron Roth’s new book The Ethical Algorithm: The Science of Socially Aware Algorithm Design explains how this new field is addressing our need to “better protect humans from the unintended impacts of algorithms while continuing to inspire wondrous advances in technology” (publisher’s description).

The book is available on November 1st from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other booksellers.
